49. In the cold night of a European river, the spotlight dips to the bottom and immediately hits the incredible scene: hundreds of American Signal Crayfish huddled together in a living carpet covered in mud and rocks. They crawl over each other, digging, snapping their claws and tearing at everything in their reach, from fish eggs to small fish that have not yet swum away. Just a few meters away, a fisherman pulls the first trap of the night and it is filled with 30 to 40 fish, ten times the number the native species has ever achieved. As kilos of crayfish are dumped onto the deck, the numbers appear to send chills down everyone’s spines: hundreds of kilos in a single night – an untapped “treasure”. But behind that seemingly golden moment, the biggest question looms clearer than ever: is this an economic opportunity or a signal of an ecological disaster that is accelerating by the hour? Should Europe eradicate this alien species before it’s too late, or should it turn it into a million-dollar industry like the US did with Blue Crab and Green Crab?
